In the next installment of Outside the Box – we use 5 basic exercises with an elliptical trainer.  The 5 exercises are push ups, squats, crunches, burpees and parachute jumpers.

The workout will consist of 3 minutes of elliptical trainer in the following sequence 1 min slow 1 min fast 1 min slow coupled with 4 simple body weight exercises to be performed in a circuit fashion.

Warm up:  Get on the elliptical trainer for 3-4 minutes, then get off and do some light stretching.  Warm up with 15 jumping jacks 20 body weight squats and 10 push ups.  Then get ready, the workout is about to begin.

First Circuit:

Push Up 20 reps, Parachute Jumpers 20 reps, and 25 squats, followed by the 3 min sequence on the elliptical trainer and 1 min rest

Second Circuit

20 squats, 10 burpees, 15 push ups, 25 crunches,  3 min Elliptical sequence and one minute of rest

Third Circuit

10 push up 10 burpees 15 parachute jumpers 30 squats then the 3 min circuit on the elliptical and one minute of rest

Last Circuit

25 crunch 10 push up 25 crunch 10 burpees 25 crunch 25 squat followed by 3 min elliptical sequence

Bonus Circuit (if you want to get crazy!)

10 Burpees 15 Parachute Jumpers 15 Push Ups 30 squats followed by the elliptical sequence

Try this workout on days you need to do resistance training workouts and want to fit in some time for cardio – you will do a total of 12-16 minutes on the elliptical in 1 minute intervals of low/high/low intensity and the resistance part should take 12-20 minutes also.

This workout can be fit very easily in a morning or evening 30 minute workout session!  Make sure to cool down after you finish with some stretching after a short easy ride on the elliptical.

Equipment Recommendation: Any elliptical trainer will be good for this workout!

email me if you need more details on any of the exercises!

My Body Still Is Not Ready For Summer!

Monday, June 29th, 2009 | Ways to Burn Fat, Weight Loss Tips with No Comments »

As we near July, it has become evident that I have not done all that I need to in order to look good in my bathing suit for the summer, and I am not ready to accept that. Every single year I promise myself that by the time summer comes around I am going to be toting a six pack and not weigh more than 170 (I am 6’0). The nor weighing more than 170 pounds thingn is only when I am not weight training really hard, if I was lifting weights every day and eating lots of protein and around 4000 calories, then I would be satisfied at like 180 pounds or even 190 pounds as long as my body fat percentage remained under 6.5%. But anyway…..back to the swimsuit thing and I am not totally out of shape, there has been some work done on my part, but you get out what you put in and right now I don’t have too much that I can take out, so I have to put a lot more work in and just pray that by mid-July, my swimsuit body will be ready, if not, I will consider myself a total failure….just kidding, kinda, sorta. Ha! Anyway, as I mentioned, I am 6’0 and right now I weight around, like, ummmmmmmmmm, 183 pounds. I need to get down to 170 pounds and I was looking for some good ideas from the KOC bloggers and bloggets as to what my best course of action is? Should I just go all out and exercise for like 4 hours a day? Different people have told me different things. I have heard that yeah, if you really want to look your best and feel your best, get some cardio and strength equipment for your home and just go crazy. Don’t let up, no matter how sore you are, just keep pumping iron and doing cardiovascular workouts and the rest is history. The counter argument to that, which I have heard quite frequently as well, is that if you try and push yourself too hard, through daily physical training, cardio and strength training, that you will become so sore and beat up that you will just burn yourself out due to exhaustion and just not want to exercise anymore at all.

Is working out at home effective?

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009 | Elliptical Fitness Equipment, Treadmill, Ways to Burn Fat with No Comments »

I have always tried to make time to workout but finding the time or energy to do so is nearly impossible. I usually carry my gym bag in the trunk of my car so I can stop by the gym after work. The thought of working out daily is always on my mind but hardly ever an action. There have been times when I am excited to go to the gym but after I get out of work and start driving in traffic my energy is drained and all I want to do is get home and relax. There have even been times when I get to the parking lot of my nearby health club only to find myself parking, getting out of my car, getting my gym bag, walking a few feet and then walking back to my car and driving off home. The times when I have actually managed to walk inside the gym, I find the machines busy, and that gets me frustrated. Since I usually like to workout to relieve stress and stay in shape I realized that the frustrations that I got from trying to get a workout where defeating the purpose of why I wanted to exercise. It wasn’t until about 2 months ago that I decided to buy a recumbent bike.

I now workout at home, usually right in front of the TV while I watch my favorite TV shows. Working out at home for me has proven to be the best most effective thing I could have done. It is not a hassle, and I usually find time to exercise at least 1 hour a day 5 days a week. I think that working out should be a life style that improves our overall wellbeing. Not only is exercising good for the body but it is also good for the min. After I workout, I find myself full of energy, relaxed, and I simply feeling good about myself. What makes me even more excited is that I have started to see results. Since getting a regular workout is no longer such a hassle for me, I do it regularly and I have dropped 5 pounds and my legs and my bum are starting to get a very nice, sexy, feminine definition, which I absolutely love!!

Helpful Hints for Buying Home Fitness Equipment

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009 | Guidelines to Buying Treadmill and Home Gym Equipment with No Comments »

HERE ARE THE TOP 10 THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND WHEN YOU ARE BUYING FITNESS EQUIPMENT FOR YOUR HOME

  1. QUALITY of the machinery itself. Most of all, does the equipment allow its users to mimic natural cardio and strength motions, because without natural simulation, you will not want to use the equipment. Equipment that people don’t like to use gets an “F” in our grading of exercise equipment. Its stability, reliability, durability and structural integrity are all very essential towards the quality of a machine.
  2. WARRANTY is very important. What kind of warranty does the unit come with. If the stair climber you are buying breaks down in 3 months how do you get that taken care of? What happens when the keyboard on your Life Fitness 93x Elliptical goes out and the machine will not work? These kinds of questions must be figured out prior to purchasing equipment. You do not want to buy a product only to learn it is a lemon and there is nothing that you can do. Make sure you have stipulated in writing exactly what you warranty entails.
  3. PERFORMANCE is sometimes overlooked. You would assume that the performance of the fitness equipment would be at the top of everybody’s list when it comes to what to look for when purchasing home gym equipment, but it isoften forgotten, and people buy into the glitz and glamor of superfluous gadgets such as fans and Mp3 inputs. Features that provide more glitz than substance such as those previously mentioned, do more harm than good, and do not have a positive impact on the performance of your fitness product.
  4. LEGITIMACY of the company is key. Make sure you do not purchase from a company that gets bad reviews. There are way too many ripe apples out there to gamble on a rotten one just because the cost may be a little bit lower. You also want to make sure that the warranty you are promised is legit. The only thing worse than buying home gym equipment with little no warranty, is buying fitness gear that comes with an illegitimate warranty! Nothing is worse than assuming all will be well if and when something happens, and when it does, you get the run around from the company you bought it from. The Kings of Cardio pride themselves on making sure the customer is taken care of is a fast and friendly manner. We understand how important exercising  it is to our everyday lives and for some of us, if we miss a workout, then our day is ruined. That may seem a little over the top, but some people really do not function as well if they are used to working out when they get up every morning, and miss their training due to broken equipment. Actually, many people work out religiously either before or after work, and take great pride in their physical fitness, so we pride ourselves on making sure your equipment is always up and running. Our customer service operators are open 24 hours a day for any and all service problems. For that reason alone, we have set ourselves apart from every other fitness company on the planet when it comes to the speed and efficiency of our customer and technical support teams.
  5. USER FRIENDLY pieces of fitness equipment are the way to go. The days of manual treadmills and air bikes are over. Not only that, but the days of loud motors, as well as noisy drive and braking systems, are over as well. We are not saying that the more technologically advanced your unit is, the better your results. If you have been following, we are not advocates of spending more money on superfluous electronic/gadget/accessory upgrades. What is important however is making sure you choose a piece of equipment that does cater to your needs. It is also helpful to have substantive programs on the equipment in order to keep your home exercise workout routines sharp and fresh. Certain Heart Rate programs for instance allow for users of cardio equipment to have the machine automatically adjust itself in order to make sure that its user stays within his or her target heart rate zone. Staying within desired heart rate zones throughout your cardio fitness training (your heart rate is equivalent to your pulse) allows you to perform at a higher level and increase your results by up to 35%. That is a perfect example of how to use a program  on your piece of cardio fitness equipment and turn it into a  real “USER FRIENDLY” machine. Programs that are actually beneficial when it comes to helping us get in shape are those that allow its users to set goals for themselves and that keeps your physical fitness training fun and challenging. We always like to remind people that you do not want to be one of those guys or girls that goes to the gym, wanders around for a while, says hi to people, drinks some water, does a couple reps her and there and then goes home. Properly using your user programs on your home gym equipment or commercial gym equipment will make it so you are never one of those social butterflies while exercising. Sticking to using your programs will allow you to  have a specific plan, with set goals and stay focused.
  6. The Cost comes in the sixth spot in our 10 most important factors to consider. You will find polarized costs when it comes to buying all sorts of fitness equipment for your home. For example, there are treadmills that cost $6500 and there are treadmills that cost $165. Furthermore, home gyms, stair climbers, free weight equipment, abdominal products, upright and spinning bikes, rowing machines and all other residential, as well as commercial gym equipment, have the same wide range of pricing. The trick is to find what is right for you  and not spend too much. You don not want to spend too little either. For example, there may be  a piece of fitness equipment such as a treadmill that you really like and the price is listed at $1150. There is also another treadmill for $785 that functions just fine, but you do not like it as much, but somehow you convince yourself that you do not need the nicer treadmill and that you will learn to love the less expensive model because it will keep some extra green in your jeans. Before you know it, you never use the treadmill because it is not stable and is very light weight. Not only do you not enjoy using it, but the times when you do, your workout is consistently interrupted due to mechanical failures and technical problems with the machine. So instead of getting a machine that you really wanted and knew was a sure bet, you tried to cut corners and paid for it, literally. It is hard enough to exercise as it is that the last thing anybody needs is equipment that compromises the fluidity of your workout. In the same breath, if you are 5’5 and weigh 150 lbs., the last thing you need to do is spend a zillion dollars on very heavy, commercial/industrial, health club fitness and exercise machinery because it would be more than you need.  For instance, people call the Kings of Cardio all of the time with the intention of starting their own aerobic and cardio routines in the comfort of their own home and we are exited, they are exited, but there is only 1 problem, they weight over 400 pounds and only want to spend $1000.00!!!!!! If you weigh over a certain amount the only kind of equipment that will be right for you is commercial exercize fitness equipment. The reason that you will need gym machines that are commercial is because not many cardio pieces of equipment have mechanical capacities over 300 lbs. Your best bet is to actually call and speak one on one with a fitness expert working with the Kings of Cardio LLC. 800-990-1108 is the phone number and personal trainers are standing by to help you in your quest to find exercise machinery that is right for you.
  7. The REPUPATION of the manufacturer who produces the exercise machinery you are looking at is important as well. Try and do some quick homework on the brand name of the piece of home or commercial fitness equipment that you are looking to buy. Most of the time you will find that the company you are looking into is entirely legit and manufactures quality machinery (especially if you purchase with the Kings of Cardio) but sometimes you will find that the company in which you are looking into doesnt have a good reputation at all. Many off-brands and private labeled products come with illegitamate warranties and are prone to breaking down. It is absolutely a must that you not buy brands such as these. With all of the great fitness equipment brands such as Precor, Life Fitness, Star Trac and Cybex (some other too), why in the world would you ever gamble on a company that has negative reviews? It would make no sense. If you really want to be the guy who gets Georged by some sly fox salesman on some toy, they call a piece of cardio equipment, then by all means go for it! Maybe you can be the guy that gets a piece of fitness equipment that matches up with those of your friends that cost double what yours cost. I tried to be that guy with a stereo system once. When some slicksters came up to my car and offered me what looked like a $2000.00 stereo for $150 and some Tupac CD’s, I jumped at the opportunity, hahhahaha opportunity, and bought it ($125 and some CD’s….seriously). Then after I bought this sweet looking stereo from these sharks, I called all my friends and told them to meet me at my house to see the new amazing stereo I bought at a fraction of what they all paid for theirs and well we all know what happened…..unless your a… well…. any way it didnt work at all, and that is exactly what is going to happen to you when you buy some piece of exercise equipment called the Super Track by some freak who goes by the name of Super John the Fitness Don. But like I said, if you really want to give it one shot, then go for it and gamble! Good luck and remember we told you so. BUY A PIECE OF HOME GYM EQUIPMENT THAT IS MADE BY A REPUTABLE COMPANY!

Exercise and Healthy Eating Habits Make Working Easier!

Sunday, June 21st, 2009 | exercise equipment, Weight Training with No Comments »

For the past 2 months I have been doing a workout which has been great, I have already seen amazing results. I had gotten out of my workout because I was to busy working and making other excuses, I no longer had a ton of time to go to the gym so for a few months I was working out once…  maybe 2 times a week if I was lucky. After a few months of this routine, I started to notice how out of shape I was getting and my energy level was way down.  Due to the fact that I stopped exercising as much and had basically given up on my cardio and strength routines, I started to feel pretty lousy.

So I made a commitment to get back in shape. Since the gym took up so much time and I didn’t want to fall back into old habits of making excuses, I decided the first step would be to buy a piece of Cardio equipment for the house. This decision was due mostly in part to the fact that it will be much easier to work out whenever I want, instead of having to go to the gym, sit in traffic, hope someone isn’t on the equipment I am on, and most of the time, when I am really excitied and decide to go to the gym, after sitting on my but in the car for the whole ride there, Im not even pumped up any more by the time I walk in the gym!

After much debate and some research I found The Kings Of Cardio, Scott was the fitness expert I dealt with there and he went above and beyond to help me find something that would motivate me to get up every day and use it. We decided on a Cross Trainer made by Ketler The Alpine Trainer is what its called. Along with that, my fitness expert put 30 min calisthenics workout plan together which I have been doing after my cardio. That keeps my muscles, tendons and joints warm and loose……

So now its been 2 months and I have to say I have never felt better. So if anyone is curious, here is a typical day for me as far as working out and eating goes..Wake Up 6:30 am Make coffee and head downstairs to work out… Ten Minutes of stretching 6:45 am to 7:30….Then,  Eliptical workout 7:30 to 8:00. When that is over, 4 sets Lunges on both legs 20 total is next. Followed by, 4 sets of squats 15 per set, 4 sets of pull ups, 4 sets of dips 15 per set, 4 sets of push ups 15 per set, 2 sets crunches 20 per set 2 sets leg lifts 20 per set. And that’s that!!!!!

This may sound like a lot but it only takes half and hour and there are no weights involved. In the beginning just do what you can do, you will work up as you go. Success is a journey, not a destination. Remember that. One thing that Scott emphasized to me, over and over, which he said the owner taught him, is that Winners don’t quit, and quitters dont win. So yeah, it may look like a lot of physical training and exercise, but its well worth it, and you get out what you put in.

As far as eating goes I have been making smoothies in the morning with bananas blueberry’s strawberry’s, soy milk and granola. As far as the rest of the day goes I try to eat as healthy as possible for lunch i will usually have a salad with grilled chicken and for dinner I try to stick with fish or chicken and fruits and vegetables. One of the keys for me has been not to stick to some sticked diet you have to live a little bit or what your doing won’t last, so I just try to stay healthy without depriving myself of the things I like. So I hope this is helpful to someone it sure was for me. – Jimmy Weis

Thinking Outside the Box: Eliptical Workout

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009 | Elliptical Fitness Equipment, Ways to Burn Fat, Weight Loss Tips with No Comments »

Whether you own an elliptical and are looking for new ways to use it, or are interested in buying one, you should be aware that there are many ways to turn this machine into an effective gut buster!  In the absence of resistance bands or dumbbells, here are some ways to play with the machine by varying resistance.  Using the resistance listed below – I will then show you an incredibly effective and short workout!

Elliptical trainers can vary resistance through a few different ways.

  1. Speed you move your legs (revolutions)
  2. Intensity or resistance of the machine
  3. Your position (standing up, or in semi squatting position or in a full squat position on the eliptical)
  4. and Whether you push the pad with your heel or your toe

These 4 elements can be used to vary your workouts to BLAST your body in only 20-30 minutes!

HERE IS WHAT TO DO!

The first part: Start the machine at a steady pace for a 4 minute warm up

Next Stage is 5 minutes of 10/20 blasts: increase the resistance to a mid level intensity for yourself, and during this section go as fast as you possibly can for 10 seconds, followed by 20 seconds of recovery.  Repeat for 5 minutes straight. (push with heels)

Next Stage of 4 minutes: do 15 seconds in a full squat position (squatting while you hold on to the handles for support and staying in the squat while you move your legs quickly) 15 seconds in a semi squat position and then 30 seconds of rest.  Repeat 4x through this sequence

Next State of 4 minutes: Do Mud running for 30 seconds 30 sec rest followed by 20 blast 40 sec rest, repeat this sequence 2x.  Mud running..turn the machine up to the highest resistance and go as hard and as ‘fast’ as you can.  Note: the resistance should be high enough that you have to aggressively push with your arms!  Drive mostly with the arms here while keeping your back straight to get an AB WOROUT on an eliptical!!!!

Next Stage: 1 minutes of balls out going fast at a high resistance

Recover Stage: go light at an easy resistance for 2 minutes – you can end here for a short workout or go on for some more!

Next Stage of 2 minutes: Mud running..turn the machine up to the highest resistance for 30 seconds followed by 30 seconds of ‘rest’ at a lower resistance, repeat.  Note: the resistance should be high enough that you have to aggressively push with your arms!  Drive mostly with the arms here while keeping your back straight to get an AB WOROUT on an eliptical!!!!

Next 2 Min Stage 10 sec blast, 20 rest, 30 mud run, 10 sec blast 30 mud run, 20 second rest

Next 3 minutes: 10 sec blast 20 sec squat 10 sec blast 20 sec rest, repeat 3x

Cool Down: Congratulations!  You made it through an incredibly tough workout!  Take 2-5 minutes to go slow and let your heart rate come down and your body cool down naturally.

This workout will burn more calories than your basic eliptical training workouts and will stimulate your metabolism in a huge way!  By switching this workout in every 2-4 weeks for 3 days straight you can be sure that your body will not fall into a “routine”.  In plain english – THIS CAN BUST THROUGH YOUR PLATEAUS AND GET YOU BACK ON TRACK WITH YOUR GOALS.

I recommend the Kettler CTR3 Elliptical ,  the Life Fitness 95xi Elliptical Crosstrainer, or the Life Fitness 9500HR Elliptical for the best units for this workout!  The sturdy frames of the Life Fitness models and the high levels or resistance make them great matches!

Enjoy this kick butt cardio workout and stay tuned for more ideas on how to provide incredible variety using single pieces of equipment by thinking outside the box!

Cardio Training through Sports and Fitness Equipment

Friday, June 12th, 2009 | Ways to Burn Fat with No Comments »

Playing different sports is a great way to stay in shape through fun and action packed exercise. Time flies by much quicker when you are running up and down a basketball court, playing hoops with your friends, than it would if you were doing sit-ups at home with your feet fastened under a book case.  Being a multi-dimensional athlete helps eliminate those mundane and routine workouts, the workouts that make each second feel like a minute, and each minute feel like an hour. The ones that don’t provide the kind of excitement we are looking for after a long day of work at the office. The ones where we look at the clock the entire time to see if it is time to leave yet. We need to eliminate those kinds of fitness training programs through various cardiovascular athletic competition. It is important to incorporate sports such as Basketball, Volleyball, Swimming, Yoga, Softball, Tennis, Baseball, Ice Skating, Golf, Football, and Track & Field into our everyday lives if possible. Sports are fun because we get to compete with our friends and before we know it, we have got in an amazing cardiovascular and strength workout.

Another benefit of actually “getting out on the field”, other than the fact that it works out our body in ways that we are not used to , therefore keeping our exercises fresh, is that playing sports drastically increases our coordination, agility and balance. When you lift weights, run on treadmills, train on an elliptical, climb stair steppers, or ride on an upright bike/recumbent bike/spin bike/stationary bike, your muscle memory becomes accustomed to the same, repeated motions. Doing the same exercises over and over again doesn’t allow you to tone virtually every spot of your entire body like playing the different sports mentioned above allow you to.

When you are playing sports you are unconsciously tearing down and rebuilding all muscles in your body, but through adrenaline and excitement, you push through the aches and pains without notice. If you have ever played sports, you know what it is like to wake up the next day after a rough game and your entire body is extremely sore, and you think to yourself, “Why am I so sore, I was not this sore during or after the game?” This is because the physical fitness aspect of your exercising was out-matched by your mind and its ability to concentrate and adapt to competition.

That total body soreness you feel from playing volleyball at the beach, a tough match of tennis or football, is not attained by sitting on an exercise bike for 10 minutes. If you want to work your body towards exhaustion and really push yourself to look and feel your best, there are workout routines, when followed, that can maximize your cardio results as effectively as playing sports themselves.

You will be able to stay in shape just like a superstar athlete through the use of home gym equipment and personal fitness equipment if you mix up your routine and keep your workouts fresh and creative. Through the use of all different kinds of equipment, such as Treadmills, Elliptical, Home Gyms, Recumbent Bikes, Stationary Bikes, Exercise Bikes, spin bikes, cross-trainers, abdominal machines, multi-station strength pieces, Stair Climbers, Pilates machines and any other piece of cardio fitness equipment for that matter. Throw them all in the mix. Don’t just let your body get used to the same old boring 30 minute jog followed by 20 minutes of weight lifting. Do different exercises, work out with different muscle groups, work out with different equipment, exercise with different people, run in different locations, lift different amount of weight. Change up your sets. On Monday when you lift weights on the bench press at the gym, do 5 sets of 5. On Wednesday, instead of doing the same exercise with 5 sets of 5, do 8 sets of 3. The last thing you want to happen is for your exercise routine to become dull and redundant. It is hard to enough to carve out enough time in your busy day to do something that you like to do, let alone something that doesn’t invigorate you. Never let that happen. Always change up you fitness routine thorough playing sports with friends and through the use of all different kinds of physical fitness gear. Not just treadmills, elliptical and bikes. Use everything from the abdominal crunch machine, to the Stair Climber, to the Cross-Trainer and then jump in the pool when you are done. The point is to keep your workout routines fun and exhilarating through various exercises that train a multitude of the muscles in your body.

When is the last time you incorporated all of the machines mentioned above into your exercise routine? When is the last time you worked out with firends and actually had a good time doing it? Never let your exercise routine lose its flavor and zest. Once that happens, it becomes more like a job than a hobby, and we start counting down the minutes. Throughout your cardio or strength training, or your sports game/match, you want to put forth your best effort so that you achieve maximum results. Maximim results will not be achieved unless you enjoy what you do, period. Cardiovascular and strength training is like anything else, you get out what you put in, so put money in the bank now, and when you need that extra burst of energy at 3 o’clock in the morning, you will have enough power to make it happen!

Strength Training

Friday, June 5th, 2009 | Weight Training with No Comments »

Weight lifting and strength exercises are just as important to maintaining good health as cardio exercises.  Most of us go to the gym, stretch for ten minutes, turn our Mp3 player on, hop on the treadmill or elliptical and then hit the shower. We need to keep in mind that lifting weights, as well as other forms of muscle building, is absolutely essential if you want to remain healthy and maintain a great looking physique.  Some people still believe that lifting weights stunts growth, reduces mobility, and that strength training does not have as significant of an impact on our daily lives as cardio routines such as running, jogging, biking, climbing stairs and so on. Nothing could be further from the truth. Lifting weights and building muscle mass is just as important to your health as cardio exercises. The Kings of Cardio are and have been on the front lines of fitness since the 1980’s so trust us when we tell you that you must compliment your cardio routine with strength training.

Through proper and effective weight lifting, one is able to raise their metabolism, increase their endurance, build muscle and lose weight. People commonly think that strength training is not as significant as cardio training when it comes to burning calories and losing weight. The reason that people who state that strength training doesn’t help lose weight are wrong  is because when you lift weights you build muscle mass, and when your muscle mass is increased, so is your resting metabolic rate. Therefore, you actually burn more muscle even in your sleep from lifting weights.
