Last night we watched “24/7″, an HBO documentary based on the lives of two boxers and their daily training routines, as they prepare for a huge fight. HBO strarted this series several years ago when Floyd “Pretty Boy” Mayweather fought Oscar De La Hoya on Cinco De Mayo, 2007. In an attempt to promote the fight, and gain more PPV (pay per view) revenue, HBO created “24/7″. Well, as usual, HBO’s plan worked and their show turned out to be a smash. Hard core boxing fans and regular TV viewers from across the world loved the show and its unique inside look intot he complex lives and training methods of two world class fighters.

The latest installments of “24/7″  are centered on the upcoming Mayweather vs. Marquez fight, and I have to say that Juan Manuel Marquez takes training to levels far beyond ones imagination. Its latest episode begins with Juan Marquez running up and down volcanic mountains while picking up huge rocks and throwing them, which looked grueling, but was dwarfed and forgotten by what Marquez did next…

Once with his workout, at the bottom of the mountain, to replenish himself, Marquez drank fresh limeade and then for protein, he ate 25 quail eggs, raw. If eating 25 raw quail eggs is not the ultimate act of self disclipine, due tot he fact that it tastes horrible, but has lots of proteins, then what is? I’ll tell you what lengths this dedicated athlete went to in order to intake as many fluids, nutriens and proteins as possible. He drank his own urine! This is no exageration and if you have HBO you can watch it for yourself! Juan Manuel Marquez drank his own urine and said that he does so in order to gain an advantage on his opponent. Most boxers would run an hour or so extra on their treadmill, not go to the extremes than Juan Marquez does.

5/1/12 UPDATE – Marquez does not drink his own urine anymore and says that his new trainer was against it.
