Another Reason to Exercise At Home Instead of the Gym!

Thursday, June 30th, 2011 | weight equipment with Comments Off

A dispute over exercise equipment at a local gym boiled over into a physical altercation between Palm Springs’ top airport official and a hospital security guard.

Palm Springs International Airport Executive Director Tom Nolan and Desert Hot Springs resident Tupe Faleafaga gave conflicting accounts Wednesday of what happened Monday at the Gold’s Gym on Airport Centre Drive.

The incident took place about 12:40 p.m., according to police.

Neither man was arrested after officers arrived because it was ruled a “mutual” assault, and both men declined to press charges, according to Palm Springs Police Department spokeswoman Rhonda Long.

In a statement to The Desert Sun, Nolan said he was hit in the head, cut over his right eye and briefly knocked unconscious while using weight equipment during his lunch hour at Gold’s.

“I gained consciousness on the floor with a young man attempting to choke me while others quickly came to my rescue,” he said.

Nolan described the police report as “inaccurate” and said he did not fight with Faleafaga, who he said assaulted him without provocation.

“My only regret is that I should have been more cautious about this individual’s behavior, and I should have summoned the club’s management to address the situation,” Nolan said in the statement.

The police report has not been released because the case has not been closed by detectives, according to Sandra Benstead, the police department records supervisor.

Faleafaga said Nolan prompted the fight by taking the workout bench Faleafaga was using and aggressively guarding it after another patron took Nolan’s neighboring bench.

Gym patrons often have to share weights and equipment with others when their workouts overlap and the room gets crowded.

“He just came in and pushed me away,” Faleafaga, 23, said Wednesday. “I asked him nicely” to give it back, Faleafaga said. Nolan refused and the exchange grew heated, Faleafaga said.

Faleafaga said Nolan told him, “When I’m done with this, I’m going to knock you out.”

He said Nolan physically blocked him from taking the bench and that Nolan later kicked him in the knee.

“That’s when I just swung at him, and we both went down,” Faleafaga said. Other patrons broke up the men and then police officers arrived.

Nolan, who earlier said he considered the “personal matter closed,” did not respond to requests for comment about Faleafaga’s account.

He has served as the Palm Springs airport’s executive director since 2007 and earned more than $184,000 in 2009, according to the latest salary data filed with the state controller’s office.

Faleafaga said he regretted hitting Nolan.

“I was nervous and scared at the same time,” he said. “I’m not that kind of guy, getting in trouble and starting stuff. I felt embarrassed with him treating me like that.”

In his statement, Nolan said he asked if the club had security cameras that could “set the record straight” on the police report but there were none.

“I hope that anyone reading this does not conclude that health clubs are dangerous because they are not,” he stated. “I highly recommend becoming a member of a local club because the benefit from the exercise gained in these fine facilities greatly outweighs the probability of ever experiencing what I did.”

Cardiovascular and Strength Workouts: The Perfect Combination

Sunday, April 25th, 2010 | home fitness equipment with No Comments »

It takes two to make a thing go right. It sure does. Can we be healthy, while looking and feeling great, if we chose to ignore either running or lifting, which many people often do., while many more don’t think about running or lifting weights, but those people are near hopeless, and can be addressed at another time. For now, this discussion will focus on those who do exercise on a regular basis, but have a hard time incorporating both aspects of exercising into their workouts. For those of you who do not know the two different areas of exercise, and they can overlap at times, is cardiovascular exercise (running on treadmills, using elliptical machines, rowing on rowing machines, playing sports), and strength exercise (weight lifting).

A great example of of strength workout would include warming up, then spending about an hour lifting weights, and then a cool down. For example, on a home gym machine such as the BodyCraft Xpress Pro, one could do three sets of chest presses at 8 reps a piece. Once those are completed, it would be a good idea to work on the home gym’s triceps station. Tricep pull-downs can be performed on almost all home gym machines these days. Home fitness gyms that do not include some sort of triceps pull down  machines are out of date and not worth having, so if you have an older home gym machine, wake up, smell the coffee, and at least get a home gym machine with a triceps station.

Walking Really Helps!

Saturday, December 5th, 2009 | life fitness exercise bike, precor 956i, precor 966i, precor home gym equipment, stairmaster 4600cl with No Comments »

I have something called restless leg syndrome, which means my legs twitch at night when I’m trying to sleep. It not only keeps me awake, but really bothers my husband. A doctor prescribed something, but the possible side-effects sounded worse than my leg twitching. What I’ve figured out is that slow, steady walking for about a half hour, on a slight incline on a treadmill, will tire out my legs enough so they don’t twitch. I can do it while I watch the news, although watching the news can get me upset so I can’t sleep either. Maybe watch something boring. The idea is to get your legs tired, but not get your heart beating too hard. You can do that earlier in the day, with your regular workout, but at night, just use the treadmill to tire out your legs so you don’t kick your spouse. :)

Health Care

Sunday, November 8th, 2009 | Diabetes & Health, eliptical, Healthcare with No Comments »

As I travel around the country, going from place to place in order to transform the unhealthy into the fit, it is alarming to see how many people are truly obese and overweight, and seemingly do not care at all.  It is understandable for the weight of a human being to fluctuate due to lack of exercise, or excess eating from time to time, but what I have seen is not normal, by any standards, liberal or conservative. When I say, “What I have seen is not normal”, I am referring to the disproportionate amount of overweight people versus the amount of people that would be considered healthy by national standards, and yes, there are set standards of how much Joe Johnson should weigh based on his height and age. The question is, why are we so fat? How did it get to the point that every time I am in a mall, baseball game, or movie, there are more overweight people than non. Is it because we do not exercise as much as our European friends? Are the United States of America the fattest nation on the globe because we eat bad? According to the social conservatives, we have the best health care in the world so there is no way that our health care system could be to blame for the fact that the U.S.A. Yeah right, sure, the U.S.A. is not even in the top 10 when it comes to nations with the longest life expectancy rate, but our health care system is so spectacular! Ha! So what are your thoughts? How can we curb obesity? Is it as easy as making sure everyone spends at least 30 minutes of their day exercising? If everyone in America had a treadmill, what percentage of them would use the treadmills? If you guessed 1/10, then you are very optimistic and should be applauded for your positive outlook, but you are surely mistaken. More like 1/1000 people would actually use fitness equipment in their home on a regular basis if they had it. That is if they had the equipment at home at their disposal to use anytime they wish. Try and imagine the amount of people that actually take the time out of their day to go to the gym and stay physically fit. That number is more like 1/10000. It is crucial to maintain a consistent workout regimen and set goals. GOALS. You need to set goals. Aimlessly exercising is not optimal. Set goals and aim to achieve them.

The goal is to make health care not an issue. How can I not worry about health care you ask? Take control of your life through a balanced diet and daily exercise routine. Many of our problems are brought on us by our own inability to take care of ourselves mentally and physically. Mentally, we work too hard, and stress out as a result. Physically, we damage ourselves through eating too much, drinking too much and not exercising enough. The first thing all of our parents taught us are that “you are what you eat!” In other words, if you stuff yourself with trans fat and sugar, you are contributing to the problem, rather than the solution.

Setting goals is part of the psychological battle we fight in our war against lethargy and laziness. Another big part of the psychological side of exercising is remaining positive and optimistic. Staying in good shape and maintaining a balanced diet are long term events that should not be judged upon their short term results. The key is to progressively get better each and every day. I have said over and over that every day of your life you either get better og get worse! Which one will it be today? If you have an off day and take a step back, no big deal, just take two steps forward the next day and you will be right back on track. If you breakdown in traffic on the way home from work and go to McDonalds drive through for a double cheeseburger and french fries, who cares, just make sure you work it off the next day. We are not advocating fast food as good for you, we are just saying that just because you ate some fatty foods doesn’t mean that you should give up on your exercise routine and succumb to a passive, careless, lazy lifestyle. Even if you get off track one day, get right back on the next. Always remember, success is a journey, not a destination, so do not be discouraged with short term results. The definiton of a true champion is someone that can withstand adversity and overcome obstacles on that come up on the road towards success. Do not give up!

Now I know there are some of you out there that have a six-pack and like 3% bodyfat and have never used an elliptical in your life, but you are the exception to the rule. The amount of people that are in shape and don’t workout are slim and it shows. Have you walked around a mall in America lately? Have you gone to the movies? It is gross. To quote jay Z, “What More Can I Say?”  Last time I went to the movie theatre the 9 year old kid sitting next to me must have weighed 250 Lbs. at least, and was no taller than 5’5! Obesity in the United States of America is at an all time high and we need to do the best we can to exterminate this lazy, cocky lifestyle that way too many people in America have adopted. A lifestyle defined by your average Joe Johnson that will eat whatever, never exercise, drink and smoke, and go get pills from a Dr. when he getssick from living an unhealthy lifestyle.

Home Gym Equipment

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009 | exercise programs, Gym Equipment, Uncategorized, used fitness equipment with No Comments »

Get your home gyms and treadmills tuned up and ready for the change of weather! Soon it will be cold in most parts of the country and nobody likes exercising outside in cold weather. At least most people that work for the Kings of Cardio, but then again, we get the nice and sunny weather of beautiful Los Angeles, CA.
For those of you who are not as weatherly blessed as we are here in Los Angeles, you must not stop running and walking just because it is starting to get dark earlier and colder by the day. The great thing about purchasing home gym equipment is that once you have it, your options remain open, and you can always go back outside once in a while to exercise during winter, but make life easier for yourself and get some home fitness equipment.

The most common excuse for not neing able to work out and exercise on a daily basis is “Well I just don’t have enough time in my day.” While for most of us this excuse holds merit, we fail to realize how important daily exercise really is towards our health and overall well being. With that said, you need to carve out that 30 minute time frame each and every day in order to maintain a fit amd healthy body. Home fitness equipment is so essential to those who do not have the luxury of taking 2 hours out of there day to go to the gym.  Having a treadmill or an elliptical, or any other piece of exercise equipment at home will make fitting the time to exercise in your daily routine that much easier.

Exercise Equipment

Sunday, September 13th, 2009 | Abdomial Exercise - Stomach Workout, Diabetes & Health, eliptical, Guidelines to Buying Treadmill and Home Gym Equipment, Sleep and Fitness, sports equipment with No Comments »

The recent increase in the amount of people in the United States that purchase fitness equipment for their home is a good sign. Are we finally realizing that happiness is attained through gym equipment rather than designer clothes? We here at Kings of Cardio sure hope so!

Recently in the news, there has been even more coverage focused around heathcare, than the average daily dosage. It is well known that the U.S.A. is the only first world nation on the planet that does not offer a comprehensive, universal healthcare system. The counter argument to that is something in the realm of “well that’s why we have the best doctors.” That argument is flawed to say the least. Our nation is not even in the top 10 when it comes to highest life expectancy rates! Why? One reason is that 9/10 people would be clueless if you asked them what an elliptical is, or what a stair climber is, or what their favorite piece of fitness equipment is. Home gym equipment, gym equipment, sports equipment, or weight equipment is foreign to most people.

Let us give you some advice, if you spend more time eating every day, then you do exercising, then you will be unhealthy and you will not have the rock hard body that you would like to have.  Using gym equipment should not be as difficult as math. Your daily exercise routiner should not have the same level of intensity as one of your study sessions. So get up, get out and get something. Don’t just waste your time away like a fat ass sitting on the couch all day and waiting for something good to happen. You must make it happen through staying true to your fitness routine. Daily exercise, along with personalized fitness goals, will enable you to look and feel like you really want to. How many times in your life have you looked in the mirror and told yourself that you are going to start exercising in some form or another? Aren’t you tired of always just hoping and wishing? Isn’t it time to get something done? Even if you have not done any cardio or strength training in the last 10 years, you can still get in shape. You do not have to start of by running on the treadmill for 2 hours everyday at top notch speeds on the “interval training” propgram. The great thing about exercising is that you are your own boss. If you have not worked out in a very long time, then just get on the treadmill for like 10 minutes and walk at low speeds. Do this everyday until you feel comfortable picking up the pace. The key is to walk a little bit longer and start moving a little bit faster as you progress in your workouts.

“24/7″

Sunday, September 6th, 2009 | eliptical, elliptcle trainer with No Comments »

Last night I watched “24/7″, an HBO documentary based on the lives of two boxers and their daily training routines, as they prepare for a huge fight. HBO strarted this series several years agao when Floyd “Pretty Boy” Mayweather was fighting Oscar De La Hoya, in an attempt to promote the fight, and gain more PPV (pay per view) revenue. Well it worked and the show turned out to be a smash. Hard core boxing fans and regular TV viewers from across the world loved the show and its unique inside look intot he complex lives and training methods of two world class fighters.

The latest installments of “24/7″  are centered on the upcoming Mayweather vs. Marquez fight, and I have to say that Juan Manuel Marquez takes training to levels far beyond ones imagination. Its latest episode begins with Juan Marquez running up and down volcanic mountains while picking up huge rocks and throwing them, which looked grueling, but was dwarfed and forgotten by what marques did next….

At the bottom of the mountain, to replenish himself, Marquez drank fresh limeade and then for protein, he ate 25 quail eggs, raw. If eating 25 raw quail eggs is not the ultimate act of self disclipine, due tot he fact that it tastes horrible, but has lots of proteins, then what is? I’ll tell you what lengths this dedicated athlete went to in order to intake as many fluids, nutriens and proteins as possible. He drank his own urine! This is no exageration and if you have HBO you can watch it for yourself!

Best Way to Eliminate Stress

Saturday, May 30th, 2009 | Ways to Beat Stress with No Comments »

Tonight the Cleveland Cavs play the Orlando Magic in game five of the Eastern Conference Finals. Since I was born and raised in Cleveland I am a huge Cavs fan, so to say that I am stressed is an understatement. I beat the hell out of the stress that was beating the hell out of me….

When I woke up in the morning, I grabbed a bottle of water out of the fridge and jumped on my StairMaster 7000PT. Exercising is the best way to beat stress. Period. I don’t care how many doctors think that medication is better than exercise, if there are any that do, because I know how great physical training makes me feel. I am totally convinced that Cardio Training and Strength Training are the best weapons to use as we fight stress caused in our daily lives from our job, economic situation, family issues and whatever else makes us tense. So where were we? Oh yeah, I jumped on the StairMaster 7000PT Step mill. When I work out, having the same exercise stair climbing machine that is seen in virtually every commercial gym across the country, helps motivate me to train. Actually working out for at least an hour 3 times a week is very difficult and the last thing you want to interfere with you getting in a great workout is the fitness exercise equipment itself. The StairMaster 4200, 4400 and 4600 all have stationary foot pedals versus the StairMaster 7000PT exercise stair stepper has what we like to call, escalator steps. The steps are constantly rotating so that you can’t cheat yourself!

You know is great for motivational purposes? Cardio exercise equipment digital programs! When you use the electronic programming options on cardio fitness equipment you are able to track your progress and push yourself in a way that it becomes fun as you set new goals and achieve them. For example, if I pick out a program on my StairMaster that is 40 minutes long, I am going to push myself to finish the forty minutes. Through the programming and feedback on the exercise equipments display console, you are aware of how long you have been working out for and how much time you have left. This is beneficial because you are less likely to quit exercising after 32 minutes if you have a 40 minute workout plan laid out and you can see that you only have 8 minutes left to complete your routine. On the other hand, if you have not set a goal for your exercise workout routine, you have no motivation to keep working out and pushing yourself like you need to in order to achieve maximum results.

When using a treadmill, the programming options are very important motivational tools as well. Different programming options such as Fat Burn, Weight Loss, Interval Training, Heart Rate, Heart Rate Interactive, Golf Course, Tennis Training and manual all allow users to keep their workouts fresh and inspirational each and every time they use cardio fitness equipment. As a runner, you will see results quicker and your workout will be more effective done if you are working out using programmability such as Mountain Training that automatically incorporates steep hills into your workout than you would if you arbitrarily picked out an amount of time and incline percentage for the treadmill to be set at throughout your cardio exercise routine.

In conclusion, if you are feeling stressed out for any reason, plan an exercise routine, jump on a nice piece of cardio fitness equipment and pick out one of the programs it has so that you do not get bored and feel inspired to exercise. You will thank us later – GO CAVS!
